Traders said commission house selling on the nearby months weighed on New York throughout the session, as speculators continued to relinquish positions ahead of July's approaching first notice day. While scale-down buying from the industry helped to offset some of the liquidation pressure, the specter of a large speculative long position in the CFTC's Commitments of Traders report due for release later today held prices down. "New York seems to be a little afraid of the spec liquidation yet to come, so the market wasn't able to hold the rally," said one trader. Traders said speculators (non-commercial plus non-reportable) could still be net long more than 10,000 lots in the latest tally, due out after 1600 EDT/2000 GMT Friday. Front-month July finished down $6 at $1,413 a tonne after trading from $1,408 to $1,425. Second-position September, whose open interest tally now surpasses July's, slipped $4 to $1,455, while the outer months finished down $1 to up $1. Volume totaled an estimated 9,605 lots. With fundamental developments still scarce, technical discussions dominated market activity this week. Traders said July's failure over the past few days to fill a gap from $1,432-1,441 gave sellers further amunition, but steady scale-down buying toward the $1,410 level pointed to further range-bound activity. Options activity was quiet today despite the expiry of the July contract. Total options turnover reached 1,344 lots. 090949 MET jun 97
