Benchmark September ended $4 a tonne lower, at $1,625, after ranging between a new life-of-contract high of $1,655 and $1,598. Spot July, which entered delivery period today, rose $3, to $1,584, after rallying to a lifetime high of $1,620 -- the highest spot price on a continuous weekly chart since 1989. The remaining contracts finished $7 to $13 lower. Cocoa prices rose at the opening, bolstered by fund-led buying. Momentum accelerated after September pierced key resistance levels, touching off a series of buy-stops. But a round of origin selling and profit-taking halted the rally and pushed September more than $20 lower before local short-covering and light speculative buying trimmed losses, traders said. 181001 MET jun 97
