Benchmark September futures tumbled $71 per tonne, to end at $1,614, the lowest close since June 20. Traders said a growing consensus that the market's dazzling climb to nine-year highs in June had been overdone sent prices spiralling downward this morning. Technically, the September contract's failure on Tuesday to clear a contract high set just last week of $1,737 prompted speculators to liquidate long positions early on. Manufacturer-linked buying briefly stemmed the slide, but the funds later resumed their onslaught, dragging September to an intraday low of $1,610. Cocoa prices have lost more than five percent of their value in the past two days. While news related to next season's harvest in West Africa has been scarce in recent days, analysts said signs of more favorable growing weather in the Ivory Coast have cast a shadow over the market. 031049 MET jul 97
