July futures fell $1 a tonne on the day, to $1,419, a new three-week low, after ranging from $1,408 to $1,427. September delivery finished down $2, at $1,459, trading from $1,448 to $1,465, while the remaining months rose between $3 and $9. With little fresh news to go on, the market drifted aimlessly for most of the session, hemmed in by origin sales and switch activity overhead, and trade buying toward the lows. An early round of speculative liquidation knocked New York prices to the day's lows, but scale-down buying from the manufacturing sector once again limited the downturn. Short-covering from locals helped the market claw back above unchanged, but brisk sales on the nearby switches dragged the nearby positions back down ahead of the closing bell. With July delivery set to go into notice period in two weeks, the switches would likely remain in the spotlight. "The real focus was on the spreads, there hasn't been a lot of outright business," noted a floor broker in New York. Traders said signs of an immproved outlook for pod development on next year's Ivorian crop has weighed on sentiment all week. Market participants also cited strength on the U.S. dollar and the British pound amid growing uncertainty about the future of monetary union in Europe. "The weakness in the French franc continues to attract Ivorian cocoa to the market," said another dealer. Technically, September futures narrowed missed taking out a near-term downside target at $1,445, which offered some support. Traders said tomorrow's close-out of July options could push the market toward $1,400, a widely-held strike price, but most expected the expiry to be uneventful. An estimated 9,193 lots were exchanged on the day.
