Fueled by a strong rally on Wednesday and sharp gains in the London market overnight, prices raced higher from the opening in New York, falling just shy of life-of-contract highs set in April. Benchmark September rose $63 a tonne at one point, with heavy buying by commodity funds leading the way. Profit-taking at the highs halved the gains toward midday, but a renewed round of speculative buying lifted the market back toward the day's ceiling by the closing bell. September climbed $57 a tonne to end at $1,571, having traded from $1,540 to $1,571. Spot July rose $52, to $1,523, while the outer months were $55 to $56 higher. Talk that dry weather in the Ivory Coast may be hampering early pod growth on the 1997/98 cocoa crop has sent jitters through the market in the past few days, noted Steve Platt, analyst with Dean Witter in Chicago. "They're still talking poor pod development in West Africa as a factor contributing to the better buying interest," said Dean Witter analyst Steve Platt. But he cautioned that it was too soon to tell how next year's harvest would fare. "Cocoa has been consolidating for a long time," he added. "But it is still hard to say the crop is no good out of the Ivory Coast. The weather in July and August is going to be the determinate factor." Traders were also fretting about an emerging "El Nino" weather pattern. Earlier in the week, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said warm ocean temperatures off the western coast of South America had triggered an El Nino in the Pacific, which could bring dry, damaging weather to cocoa-growing areas. While El Nino poses a special risk to tropical crops like cocoa, traders warned that its impact may not be felt until next year, if at all. "It is definitely a bit premature," said a New York-based trader of the El Nino worries. He noted that Asian cocoa production, and especially the important Indonesian crop, would be more at risk from El Nino than the West African harvest. Technically, cocoa looked poised to challenge eight-year highs set in April. A gap carved out on September at the open stretching from $1,514-1,540 should offer solid support, traders said. The day's volume was heavy, at an estimated 30,127 lots.
