"It was overbought," said Rich Wistisen, an analyst with Commodity Information. "This was just a mop-up of yesterday." But a late-day round of local and commission house buying picked prices up from session lows, they said. Benchmark July futures ended down $14 at $1,467 a tonne after trading between $1,490 and $1,446. Second-month September closed down the same at $1,493, while the remaining months slumped $14 to $18. Speculative buying in the morning briefly extended Thursday's rally, but traders said views the market was overbought and the July contract's inability to get through key resistance at $1,494-$1,501 a tonne, a chart gap formed last month, weighed on sentiment. Selling by the commercial sector knocked prices into negative territory and disappointed speculators joined the sell-off. Downward momentum accelerated after July fell through support at $1,460, touching off sell-stops, they said. Technically, traders said July key support was pegged at $1,445-$1,441, while the $1,494-$1,501 chart gap was still seen as a critical resistance level. Wistisen said the market may still try to fill the upside gap, but that the fundamental outlook would still weigh on cocoa. "The fundamentals are stacking up," he said. "The deficit is down and by the time all is said and done there could be a surplus. Nothing spectacular is going on on the consumption side and we keep having strong crops from the Ivory Coast." Turnover was brisk at an estimated 12,540 lots. 191202 MET may 97
