But volume in New York was extremely thin, with the LIFFE market in London closed for a bank holiday, and traders said today's activity hardly qualified as a turnaround. "I wouldn't read too much into it," one trader said. "It was mostly an inside day and London was closed, so we really had a nothing day." Benchmark July futures rose $6 a tonne, to finish at $1,385, after ranging from $1,401 to $1,374. Spot May ended $6 firmer, at $1,374, while the back months gained $2 to $4. After hovering in on both sides of unchanged for much of the morning, dealers said a bout of trade buying helped reverse sagging prices. A breach of resistance at Friday's high of $1,392 accelerated the upswing, prompting locals to cover their short positions. But toward the close, buying interest faded and prices drifted off highs, they said. Technically, traders continued to peg July near-term resistance at $1,392. Major resistance awaited at $1,405, followed by $1,416-$1,418. Support was seen at $1,365-1,360, with a push through that level leading to a test of $1,330. Turnover reached an estimated 3,665 lots.
