Benchmark July futures rose $24 a tonne, to finish at $1,409, after ranging from $1,418 to $1,385. Spot May ended $25 higher, at $1,399, while the back months gained $24 to $27. Cocoa prices gapped higher at the outset, as expected, after a strong performance by the British pound overnight. Sterling rallied more than a cent against the dollar on Tuesday after the U.K. raised its base rate 25 basis points and announced new central bank freedom to set interest rate policy. Traders said the U.S. dollar's weakness versus the British pound prompted arbitrage to focus on buying cheaper dollar-denominated New York cocoa. By comparison, London's benchmark July contract ended down seven stg, to 988 stg. "The (British) pound helped us out today," said one trader, who noted upward momentum accelerated after the July contract breached $1,410, touching off buy-stops. The trader said locals tried to initiate more buy-stops thought to be building near $1,425, but scale-up trade buying and light profit-taking cut into gains. Technically, traders pegged July near-term resistance at $1,421-$1,425. Support was seen at $1,400, followed by today's low of $1,385. While many traders noted the July contract appeared to have established a base at the $1,385 level, they said the market would probably need some constructive fundamental input to rally much higher than $1,425. "I don't see anything at this point to give the market a big boost," said one trader. "And there's no relief from a good outlook for the Ivory Coast crop." Weather and crop analysts in Abidjan said on Tuesday continued rains across the Ivorian cocoa belt in late April were favorable to the mid-crop. Crop analysts now expect the total 1996/97 crop to close in on last year's record 1.2 million tonnes, including a mid-crop production of between 160,000 and 180,000 tonnes. Turnover was moderate, at an estimated 7,292 lots. 071043 MET may 97
