Benchmark July futures fell $6 a tonne on the day, to $1,422, having ranged from $1,412 and $1,426. Spot May, which goes off the boards next week, fell $11 to $1,412, while the remaining months eased between $1 and $3. Prices skidded lower at the open in a quick burst of speculative selling, breaching near-term support at $1,420-1,418, but scale-down industry buying halted the slide. The market then drifted in weaker territory until just before the close, when locals and commission houses stepped in to cover short positions. But the modest rally ran out of steam $2 short of the previous settlement, and drifted back down by the close. Trading volume remained exceedingly light, reaching an estimated 3,121 lots at the close. With little fresh news to influence the market, traders focused on chart factors. They said July would need to punch through resistance at $1,434 to encourage new buying, while support was eyed toward $1,400.
