July futures rose $13 per tonne on the day, to finish at $1,422. The market spent the entire day in positive territory, trading between $1,425 and $1,412. Spot May, which expired at noon today, settled at $1,427, up $27, while the remaining months gained $12 to $14. But with volume only reaching estimated 4,412 lots on the day, and the active July contract confined to a $13 range, traders hesitated to read too much into today's activity. "Locals are trying to make this market happen, but there's nothing there," one trader said. "It's just sideways action." Strength in the British pound against the U.S. dollar gave a boost to New York, but traders said today's upswing was stymied by London's weak performance. LIFFE July cocoa ended down three stg on Wednesday, to 997 stg. "It looked like the market wanted to do better," said one New York trader. "But London was stuck with the strong sterling." Traders said those remarks made by Ivory Coast Commodity Minister Guy-Alain Gauze did little to shake cocoa out of its trading range. Gauze said Wednesday the country's cocoa production should be between 900,000 and 950,000 tonnes in the October-September 1996/97 season. He added cocoa exports would be about 750,000 to 800,000 tonnes with the rest going to local consumption. But with many recent analysts' forecasts pegging the Ivory Coast crop at more than one million tonnes this year, traders said the fundamental outlook would probably keep the market under pressure. "The market recovered slightly today," said Refco Inc analyst Ann Prendergast, "but it is likely to go lower because of the burden of plentiful stocks, the likelihood of the Ivory Coast crop being close to last year's record crop and a lower deficit." 151032 MET may 97
