Speculative buying fed the rally throughout the session, with scattered new buying noted in addition to steady book-squaring. Prices held well into positive territory throughout the day, though manufacturer-linked selling slowed the upward momentum, dealers said. Benchmark May futures cleared the widely-watched $1,300 level just before the closing bell, rising $23 to end at $1,302 a tonne. It closed toward the top of the day's $1,286-$1,304 trading range. After languishing near life-of-contract lows for much of the past two weeks, analysts said the market appeared to be rebounding from a sharply oversold condition. "Cocoa is acting much better," said Smith Barney analyst Walter Spilka. "The market is extremely undervalued." With the world market expected to show a deficit of around 200,000 tonnes for the 1996/97 crop year, after posting a surplus in the prior year, cocoa looked poised for further gains, Spilka said. "There is less production and more consumption," he said. "There is plenty of cocoa around now but that won't be the case in the coming weeks." Traders said continued hot and dry weather in top-grower Ivory Coast, coupled with a brighter technical outlook, sparked today's short-covering rally. "The market really couldn't have looked much worse there for a while, but we're finally starting to see some short-covering," said one trader. "If the dry weather continues, you might see a little strain on the Ivorian mid-crop," said a New York-based broker. But he cautioned that any significant rally would encounter heavy producer selling. On the charts, today's intersection of the five and 10-day moving averages around $1,278-1,279 may trigger further short- covering, dealers said. Resistance was next seen toward $1,318-1,320, with a major objective at $1,350. An estimated 9,322 lots were exchanged on the day, compared with Tuesday's official volume of 8,004. 271118 MET feb 97
