New York cocoa eeked out modest gains early in the session, but in a familiar pattern, producer selling checked the gains. When follow-through buying failed to emerge, speculators promptly liquidated long positions. "There has definitely been some short-covering, but there have been equally good origin sales," said one trader. Widely-watched May futures fell $17 a tonne on the day, to $1,286, trading from $1,282 to $1,308. Spot March slumped $16, to $1,246, while the remaining months fell $17 to $20. Traders said today's performance confirmed that the market would encounter enormous industry resistance into any rally, but opinions were divided as to whether the recent uptrend had been halted. "It was due to pull back a little bit here," said one analyst, who noted forecasts for a substantial world supply deficit for the current crop year. But some traders pointed to better-than-expected arrivals in the Ivory Coast as calming people's concern over supply availability. "It appears that there are ample supplies of cocoa for the near-term," the trader said. "It may just continue to trade sideways." On the charts, May would run into support at $1,272-1,276, traders said. Resistance was seen at today's high of $1,308, with further obstacles noted between $1,315-1,320. Volume on the exchange was estimated at 6,353 lots, compared with Thursday's official total of 7,618. 031037 MET mar 97
