Steady speculative selling, however, kept prices in negative territory for the bulk of the session, they added. Most-active May fell $8 per tonne on the day, to $1,270, having traded from $1,280 to $1,258. Spot March eased $1, to $1,230, while the outer months finished $4 to $5 weaker. Prices rose at the outset, defying pre-opening expectations, as a drop in the value of the U.S. dollar versus the British pound touched off some arbitrage interest. But with no follow through to the upside, the market quickly reversed course and slipped below the $1,260 level basis May for the first time in nearly two weeks. On the charts, traders pegged May support at its life-of-contract low $1,252, while resistance was seen near last week's high of $1,284, followed by $1,291 and $1,300. A lack of fresh fundamental imput, however, was likely to keep prices confined to a sideways range in the short term, traders said. In the last several sessions, the active May contract has seesawed between $1,250 and $1,290. "We are locked in a range and the market is not attractive to anyone," one trader said. He said interest may pick up as open interest in the March contract dwindles ahead of its expiry March 13. As of Friday, March open interest stood at 862 lots, down 39 lots from the previous session.
