Most-active May ended up $16 at $1,278 a tonne after trading from $1,279 to $1,262. Spot March closed up $18 at $1,231, while the outer months finished $15 higher. The dollar's slippage against Sterling touched off some arbitrage interest early in the session, as operators favored the New York market over sterling-denominated London cocoa. London futures ended mixed on Friday, with active May easing two stg, to 874 stg. Traders said that despite today's gains, which nearly countered all of Thursday's losses, the market appeared to be treading water. "This is a pure consolidation period," one trader said. "Unitl it breaks out, it's going to be quiet." On the charts, traders pegged near-term May resistance at Thursday's high of $1,284, but said they did not expect to see substantial buying interest until May traded above $1,291. Support was seen at its life-of-contract low $1,252. Turnover was light at an estimated 4,375 lots today, down from Thursday's official tally of 5,611 lots. 231020 MET feb 97
