A BRIEF LOOK AT CROATIAN PRESS ON MONDAY

ZAGREB, Aug 8 (Hina) - Today's Zagreb-based newspaper VJESNIK brings a long interview with Mr. Jure Kolak, the mayor of the Croatian city of Vukovar (far east of Croatia) that was occupied by Serb aggressors in the end of 1991. Mr. Kolak stresses that 1850 defenders were killed, 2630 persons registered as missing, 430 children remained orphans and fatherless or motherless, 2500 persons wounded, 570 of them invalids, during the defence of the city. Speaking about people expelled from Vukovar Mr. Kolar emphasizes that their health is deteriorating in bad conditions in which displaced persons now live. "There are more and more displaced persons suffering from cancer, mental illnesses, tuberculosis," he says concluding that "The situation in which refugees live requires urgent measures for resolving their problems." In today's issue VJESNIK publishes an article of Tomo Podrug a writer from Zagreb, in which he comments on Russian-Serb relations. The recent visit of Russian Defence Minister Pavel Grachev to Serb irregulars in the occupied areas of Croatia "could surprise only those who are not better informed of the Russian-Serb ties... The ties are not only established on the Slavic origins but they have been the consequence of their similar historical inclinations: political, hegemonic and territorial pretensions," notes Podrug. The other Zagreb-based daily VECERNJI LIST publishes a statement of the Zagreb Cardinal, Msgr. Franjo Kuharic, on the forthcoming visit of the Pope to Croatia. "The visit of the Holy Father is an event to be written in Croatia's history. This is to be his meeting with our present time as well as with our past," Cardinal Kuharic says. VECERNJI LIST writes about the position of the Hungarian minority in Croatia and quotes the chairman of the Association of Hungarians in Croatia as saying that Hungarians joint Croatian defenders in the liberation war but now they can not enjoy the same minorities' rights as Serbs and Italians are able.
