A BRIEF LOOK AT CROATIAN PRESS ON THURSDAY

ZAGREB, July 14 (Hina) - Today's VJESNIK dedicates the front-page editorial to an extraordinary session of the Croatian Parliament, scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 16, which is expected to adopt a resolution on the UNPROFOR mission in Croatia. It says that opposition parties are not likely to attend and that they have announced a meeting for today to present their views about UNPROFOR. It it still uncertain whether the meeting will be held in Parliament. Ivan Marijan Tomic, a member of the Croatian Farmers' Party (HSS), says in an interview: "If Serbia were rewarded with 49 percent of Bosnian territory, it would be a victory of Serbian expansionist policy; and after break 'victors' will come asking for more ..." In an article headlined "Evictions - a judicial problem" the paper deals with evictions from apartments, saying in part: "Evictions should not be mixed with politics as it would justify the claims of the Croatian Helsinki Committee that evictions are a political and not legal act, which should not be correct." "Germany - No.1" is the title of a commentary which says that "the U.S. president has almost 'impudently' called on Germay to assume a leading role in Europe and the world, making it clear that Washington finds the balance of power in Europe and the world to have changed significantly." Another Zagreb-based daily, VECERNJI LIST, also draws attention to Saturday's extraordinary parliamentary session on the UN peace-keeping force in Croatia. The paper brings the highlights of a press conference held by Parliament speaker Nedjeljko Mihanovic, who said in part: "Deputies of the Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS), the Croatian National Party (HNS), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Croatian Farmers' Party (HSS) and the Croatian Independent Democrats (HND) will not attend the Saturday session. They cannot hold a parallel session in Parliament, and we shall not allow Croatian Television to cover live their meeting."In this context, HSLS leader Drazen Budisa says: "If they banned our meeting in Parliament, it would mean the escalation of violence which started at an unlawful parliamentary session which elected Mihanovic as speaker in an unlawful way." The paper's Paris correspondent Mirko Galic writes in an article headlined "A White Square" about the dissatisfaction of French intellectuals with Western activity in Bosnia. The article is inspired by a poster in the Paris metro, which says: "This is what you will be able to tell your children when they ask you what you have done for Bosnia. Nothing." 141205 MET jul 94
