A BRIEF LOOK AT CROATIAN PRESS ON TUESDAY

ZAGREB, Aug 2 (Hina) - The Zagreb daily VJESNIK devotes the first and the fourth page to Prime Minister Valentic's meeting with central bank Governor Pero Jurkovic, quoting highlights from their reports on hard currency reserves, the stability of the kuna, the implementation of the stabilisation programme, privatisation and the cutting of public expenditure. The paper brings an interview with Zupanja Mayor Ivan Bukovac, headlined "We Are Trying To Live a Normal Life." Mayor Bukovac spoke about the economic situation in this eastern-Croatian town, which lives under a constant threat of shelling from the Serb- occupied area across the Sava River and caters for 16 thousand refugees and displaced persons. The other Zagreb daily, VECERNJI LIST, also gives extensive coverage to Premier Valentic's meeting with National Bank officials. The editorial by Milan Jajcinovic, headlined "Under the Spell of the Belgrade Political Theatre," interprets the real meaning of Milosevic's stance that the "Bosnian Serbs must accept the Contact Group peace plan for Bosnia-Herzegovina." Vesna Siranovic discusses a draft national program for the return of the displaced persons, passed at a recent Government session. The paper also brings an interview with former Croatian Defence Council (HVO) Chief-of-Staff Gen. Milivoj Petkovic, headlined "Time to Leave." "If there is a new outbreak of war this fall, it will start between the Serbs and the Moslems and will be very bitter. It could be harder than this one. We are not going to be passive observers," Gen. Petkovic said. (hina) as 021058 MET aug 94
