A BRIEF LOOK AT CROATIAN PRESS ON MONDAY

ZAGREB, Aug 1 (Hina) - The Zagreb daily VJESNIK devotes a lengthy commentary (by Mirko Galic) to the Saturday ministeral talks in Geneva. The commentary says, in part: "It is not unimportant that Russia and the western countries remained at the same table. Christopher and Kozyrev obviously had their own, 'domestic' reasons to interpret the Geneva meeting as they did: the American referred to the "pressure" of the Congress, and the Russian invoked the "disposition" of the Duma..." The paper brings a statement issued by the satirical weekly Feral Tribune, which is staging a strike this week in protest against a 'pornography' tax imposed by the Ministry of Culture two weeks ago. "That Feral is not a pornographic magazine is obvious to anybody with a grain of sense, but "higher political instances" wanted it officially branded as such. The imposition of such a tax on Feral (...) heralds a radical purge of the Croatian media," says the statement. VJESNIK brings an interview with leader of the Serbian National Party and Deputy Speaker of the Croatian Parliament Milan Dukic, headlined "The Serbs Do Not Need a Right to Secession." Expounding his party's latest initiative called "Reason Or War," Dukic proposed that the Croatian Government and the Serb side consider a federal or even confederal arrangement of Croatia, quoting the examples of the United States, Swiss cantons and the Aland Islands in Finland, where a Swedish minority has "its own constitution, parliament and president." An article headlined "Koschnik's Troubles" focuses on the preparations for the setting up of an Advisory Council in Mostar. "After exhausting talks with Croatian, Moslem and Serb representatives, the European administrator admitted that the talks were 'something of an ordeal,'" says the article. Another Zagreb daily, VECERNJI LIST, devotes two commentaries, headlined "Forgetfullness is a Part of the Profession," and "Lullabies and Hard Times" to Saturday's talks in Geneva. "After stressing the importance of the Saturday meeting, the ministers did not even bother to set the date for the next. They went to get some rest, for 'tis the season. On a beach or listening to crickets under a pine tree, Bosnia is quickly forgotten," says the first commentary (by Visnja Staresina), while Dunja Ujevic lays particular emphasis on the increased presence on the United States on the Balkan political scene.
