ZAGREB, Sept 30 (Hina) - A Vice-President of the Social and
Democratic Party (SDP), Davorko Vidovic, and the Secretary-General
of the Croatian Social and Liberal Party (HSLS), Jozo Rados, on
Thursday issued a joint statement expressing their concern over
statements uttered by Croatia's President Franjo Tudjman and
Interior Minister Ivan Penic during a reception held on the
occasion of the St. Michael's Day, the patron saint of the Croatian
police.
Vidovic and Rados quoted a news item released by Hina from that
event. By selecting certain segments of sentences and quoting
incorrectly, they changed the original contents of Hina's text.
Upon receiving the joint statement by Vidovic and Rados on Thursday
afternoon, the Hina editorial staff, during the telephone
conversation, cautioned the authors of differences between parts
of their text and the original text issued by the agency.
On that occasion, Davorko Vidovic said "it would be more correct
that Hina's entire sentences were quoted in the joint statement
rather than segments, but this (the quoting of parts) was done for
technical reasons and due to the lack of time."
Jozo Rados on the other hand, said that "nobody in the world quotes
entire sentences but those segments which one holds to be
problematic," and that in this case they (Vidovic and he) "took only
those segments which they intended to comment on."
The Hina editorial staff cites an example when Hina released the
sentence of Ivan Penic:" In the coming period, MUP (The Interior
Ministry) is prepared to deal with all challenges in the
maintenance of public peace and order, in spite of announcements of
an unscrupulous election campaign, to the satisfaction of Croatian
citizens." In the Vidovic-Rados statement this sentence was
wrongly transformed as follows: "MUP is prepared to confront the
unscrupulous election campaign."
In addition, Vidovic and Rados wrote that such statements "raise a
series of questions" and in their mind, "they are not a good
introduction in the forthcoming run-up to the elections," in which
the two expect an atmosphere of a free, unrestrained and certainly,
responsible political competition.
