ZAGREB, Nov 15 (Hina) - The Government will see that the meat-
processing industry "Zagrepcanka" continue operating partially
once bankruptcy proceedings in the company start, so that a certain
number of jobs could be salvaged, Deputy Prime Minister Zeljka
Antunovic said on Wednesday after a meeting with the company's
union leaders, who today staged a protest rally in front of the
government building in Zagreb.
The government will also see that the coordinating body in charge of
"Zagrepcanka" accelerates its work so that it could present a
reliable estimate as soon as possible on whether the company can
continue operating or is faced with liquidation, Antunovic said.
Antunovic believes the workers' request that they be given
severance pays cannot be met because it is not in line with the law.
Commenting on today's scuffle between the protesters and police in
front of the government building, Antunovic said she did not resent
the workers' gathering in front of the government building because
she understood their discontent, however, "those who led the
nervous people to the rally should bear responsibility for possible
incidents."
The head of the Zagreb office of the Association of Croatian
Workers' Unions, Mario Ivekovic, said after the meeting the
government obviously did not intend to pay severance pays but was
"providing for the workers" the same way as the former government.
