POREC, Oct 27 (Hina) - The new Croatian government has already
become old and has till failed to stop any negative trend in the
economy, the union of employees in agriculture, food and tobacco
industry said Friday.
The union, with most members within the Alliance of Independent
Unions of Croatia, began its fourth congress in the south Adriatic
town of Porec Friday.
Union chairman Josip Pavic said that in the past several years the
gross domestic product had plummeted by US$1,000 per resident.
The domestic food industry is almost completely destroyed, the
sowed surface has decreased by a third, and there is 35 per cent less
olive oil. These are only some indicators connected with the raw
truth about the further growth of the unemployed, he said.
However, Pavic said, the union has managed to make some progress in
labour democracy, and the most recent one, in line with which
workers will participate in the management of Rovinj's tobacco
plant, is certainly one of the most significant successes.
For these reasons the unions will continue demanding an increase in
wages, the return of the untaxable company-paid meals and the
security of working stations.
The government is claiming salaries in Croatia were too high, and
the standard of citizens is falling, Pavic asserted, adding that
unionists in agriculture, food and tobacco industries, as well as
the water supply industry, are relaying a message from this
congress that a social pact, requested by the government to be
signed with unions, will be accepted only when they receive
guarantees that the Labour Law, among others, will be amended, as
well as laws on workers' and social rights.
Members of the congress established a sector of unions for dealing
with the problems of employed women who make up almost a half of the
43,000 workers within the union.
