FIVE-MINUTE JOURNALISTS' PROTEST PASSES SUCCESSFULLY

ZAGREB, May 3 (Hina) - Wednesday's five-minute protest organised by the Croatian Reporters' Union (SNH) dubbed "Five Minutes of booming Silence" was completely successful, the SNH assessed. According to available data, compliance by reporters and workers in media was impressive -- from Vukovar to Dubrovnik between 11:55am and noon Wednesday, most media stopped work to warn with a symbolic protest about the jeopardising of the livelihood and trampling on the human and professional dignity of reporters. Hina and all the dailies "Vjesnik", "Vecernji list", "Slobodna Dalmacija", "Jutarnji list", "Novi list", "Glas Istre", "Glas Slavonije", "Karlovacki list" and "La voce del popolo" held the five minute protest during which a SNH manifesto was read. Radio stations did the same, including the Croatian Radio and the large number of local radio stations across the country. The SNH asserted reporters of the Croatian Television decided to take part in the unionist protest for the first time, and reporters of numerous other local television stations also supported the action. The protest was upheld in most weeklies. The International Federation of Journalists forwarded the SNH a message of support for the protest.
