ZAGREB, May 1 (Hina) - The Trade Union of Journalists of Croatia
(SNH) on Monday released a proclamation on the occasion of a five-
minute warning protest over the difficult situation in Croatia's
media, to be organised on May 3, World Media Freedom Day.
The SNH calls on its members and all journalists in Croatia to stop
working between 11.55 a.m. and noon on Wednesday to protest the
endangering of the existence and the trampling of the human and
professional dignity of journalists and media employees.
The proclamation says World Media Freedom Day every year reminds
the world of the imperative role the media and media employees play
in building and preserving democracy.
The SNH points out that thousands of journalists and media
employees and correspondents in Croatia today fear for their very
existence as a result of shady political-economic schemes which are
out of the public's reach and influence.
The SNH urges all colleagues in every news-room to "interrupt every
activity and communication and read the proclamation (...) Those
'five minutes of thundering silence' will suffice to show our trade
union and professional solidarity."
