ZAGREB/OSIJEK, Dec 14 (Hina) - Nine Serb detainees indicted for war
crimes went on a hunger strike at the Osijek district prison on
Wednesday.
According to them, they did so because of discrimination in court
proceedings, and a series of irregularities and injustices done to
them during proceedings, the Joint Council of eastern Croatia's
predominantly Serb municipalities said on Friday.
"We demand we be tried in The Hague because we do not trust the
Croatian judiciary. At the same time, we demand the OSCE
(Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) and other
international observers report those who unjustifiably prosecuted
us just because we are Serbs to tribunals in The Hague, Brussels,
Rome or Strasbourg", the nine prisoners said in a letter. They
described their treatment as an act of "ethnic cleansing and (a way)
of preventing the return of refugees".
The Serb detainees believe their prosecution is an attempt to
divert attention from the real perpetrators of war crimes in
Osijek, where around 180 Serbs were killed in 1991 and 1992.
