BELGRADE, Dec 13 (Hina) - The Assistant Yugoslav Defence Minister,
General Jovan Milanovic, told Belgrade's weekly "NIN" that the case
of a French Intelligence Service member, Major Pierre-Henri Bunel
was "politicised" and that he "had not been forwarding documents,"
to the Yugoslav side for which Bunel was sentenced to prison by a
French military court.
Bunel was sentenced to five years in prison in Paris last Tuesday
for spying for Yugoslavia. He was sentenced because he forwarded
confidential NATO documents to General Milanovic during the summer
of 1998. At the time, Milanovic was an advisor at the Yugoslav
Mission to the European Union.
Asked whether he received documents which would mark Bunel a
traitor of France, Milanovic said: "He gave me certain documents,
but not the ones he is being suspected of." He added the case was
"politicised".
According to Milanovic, documents have revealed "the complete
scenario of NATO's aggression on Yugoslavia - its start, stages and
aims."
Milanovic retired in June 2000 because he had allegedly been
pressured by the French Intelligence Service. Yugoslav President
Vojislav Kostunica annulled the document on Milanovic's retirement
after the October changes in Yugoslavia, and appointed him
Assistant Defence Minister.
During the trial, Bunel admitted he gave the documents to
Milanovic. He added he had done so for "humane reasons", in order to
force the then authorities in Belgrade to compromise, thus
preventing the demolishing of Yugoslavia.
