OPATIJA, Dec 7 (Hina) - Participants in the 14th seminar of the
Croatian Penology Association, which is being held in Opatija, have
warned that the legislator is continually imposing new duties on
judges, which requires more labour and money.
The conclusion was presented on the second day of the seminar in a
debate on a law on prison sentence, which was adopted recently.
The law will go into force on January 1 next year. It enables judges
to control the process of the execution of prison sentences, which
so far has been in the jurisdiction of penal administration.
The judges have warned that the law imposes new duties while the
number of judges has not been increased. They therefore request
that more executive judges be employed to prevent control over the
execution of prison sentences from becoming a secondary duty of
existing judges. They also warned about the need to acquaint judges
with basic penology because penology is not an obligatory subject
in any law school.
