At Monday's session of the Social-Economic Council, the social
partners should discuss a report of a joint working group which has
completed its job but has not voiced its opinion on the most
contentious issues - dismissal wages, dismissal periods and a
definition of a small employers.
According to the media, the government is ready to partially relent
and withdraw its proposal on increasing the number of workers with
small employers. The unionists believe this is a positive step.
They said the government was willing to make a compromise only under
the pressure of the May 1 protests.
Unionists still oppose a proposal on the reduction of dismissal
wages and dismissal periods. They refused the government's
explanation that the measures were necessary for achieving
competition in Croatia's economy.
Unionists remained with their threats to organise a general strike
should the government forward a bill of amendments to the Labour Act
to parliament without an agreement with unionists.
