Commenting on the protest staged in Zagreb today, Vidovic said such
union protests were illegitimate, and he did not understand the
"motives, since they are protesting against a law which does not
exist."
The government has called unions to participate in drawing up the
new Labour Act so that an optimal solution could be found, he said.
Vidovic said that the government had last year made a major step in
legal protection of Croatian workers. The working week has been
reduced from 42 to 40 hours, and a dozen new rights have been
introduced.
The government has also initiated an employment programme, for
which it has set aside more than 1.2 billion kuna, and social
compensations were increased by 56 percent. The number of children
receiving children's bonuses has doubled, while the right to
maternity compensation has been extended to all unemployed
mothers.
