Mesic told Croatian Radio he did not participate in discussions on
amendments to the Labour Act as it was not within his competence,
and that he could not influence the social partners, namely the
government, unions, and employers.
It is always possible to organise a general strike but the most
important thing is to achieve dialogue among the social partners,
said Mesic.
Asked about the new chief state prosecutor, Mladen Bajic, Mesic
said Bajic could launch initiatives in combating organised crime,
but that if state institutions did not function, "Bajic can only
wear himself out".
As for the latest developments in the strongest opposition party,
the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), the President said, "they are
bumble-bees eating one another". He added party president Ivo
Sanader could turn "the HDZ from a movement into a democratic party"
only through a European way of thinking. As a result, those who are
not democratically-oriented will "fall out (from the HDZ) by
themselves", said Mesic.
