of the reform, Prime Minister Ivica Racan said on Saturday. #L#
Addressing a Labour and Welfare Ministry seminar on changes to
labour and welfare legislation, Racan said the reform could not be
effected through social conflict. The government will persevere
with the reform, despite resistance, lack of understanding, and the
defence of the status quo, in order to ensure economic growth and
access to Europe, he said.
The government will not accept the refusal of dialogue and debate on
labour legislation reform, Racan said, adding that "the desirable
economic miracle will not happen unless all social partners
shoulder the burden."
Workers' protests and the government's red tape must not replace
arguments in social dialogue, said Racan.
He advocated a constructive criticising of the incumbent
authorities, but also the application of the same criteria to
employers and trade unions. He pointed to the importance of
defining the bottom level of workers' rights, which must not be
departed from.
The social partners (government, employers, unions) must not
renounce dialogue, said Racan, promising that the government
representatives would not leave the negotiating table.
Labour and Welfare Minister Davorko Vidovic said the individual
interests obstructing reforms could be stopped only with the
support of the social partners.
