(SDP) and the Democratic Centre (DC) on Monday forwarded Labour Day
messages to Croatian workers and citizens. #L#
The SDP says in its message it understands and respects the workers'
dissatisfaction and does not negate their right to protest because
it, too, is not satisfied with the large number of unemployed
people, black labour and lack of care for workers' rights.
This is why the party considers reforms in the area of labour and
labour rights exceptionally important, as reforms offer an
opportunity for new employment, the party says, adding that not all
social partners will be satisfied with the reforms the government
intends to carry out.
Aware that workers shoulder a considerable part of the burden of
changes, the SDP calls for mutual respect, tolerance and dialogue
among all social partners on workers' rights and development
priorities.
The DC claims that the reform of the labour legislation is
necessary, but warns that it should be achieved through quality
solutions instead of new layoffs and a deteriorating standard of
living.
The party warns that each new year sees more jobless workers due to
the government's policy of bankruptcies and new tax burdens.
This year more than 13,000 soldiers are to be laid off, while non-
assigned police officers have been protesting in front of the
government for 43 days, the DC warns.
