ZAGREB, Oct 1 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament on Wednesday passed a law on witness protection defining conditions and activities related to witness protection in cases when a witness's life, health, freedom or property is threatened. #L# The law, which is important for a successful fight against organised crime, was adopted in the continuation of the 37th session. A five-member commission will decide about who is included in the witness protection programme after the Chief State Prosecutor submits a request to that effect, at the proposal of the competent prosecutor or threatened person. The witness protection programme will be implemented by a police protection unit, which will determine the type of protection measures. The measures include the physical and technical protection of witnesses, their relocation, concealment and protection of property, and change of witness identity. The parliament also passed a law on changes to the law on inheritance, which transfers all inheritance proceedings from courts to public notaries. It also amended the law on conciliation, introducing the institute of alternative, out-of-court conciliation. With the support of most MPs, the parliament changed the law on the prevention of drug abuse, abolishing the Institute for the Prevention of Drug Addiction and transferring its duties to the Agency for Public Health. Under the new law, persons found in possession of drugs for personal use will face police penalties and obligatory addiction treatment. (hina) rml sb
