After some MPs warned that allowing the deliberate introduction of
genetically modified organisms in the environment could jeopardise
indigenous plants and reduce the possibility for the production of
healthy food, the government submitted an amendment additionally
restricting the zones where introduction of GMO will be allowed.
The law forbids the deliberate introduction of GMO in national
parks, nature parks and other protected zones, as well as in areas
intended for ecological agriculture and tourism.
The parliament also passed a law on seaports and the maritime
domain, which recently prompted port workers to announce an hour-
long blockade of ports for today.
Port workers are dissatisfied with the regulation which says that
one concessionaire will be able to perform only one type of service
in a port.
Legal persons which so far have performed port services will be
given the right to pre-emption in the allocation of concessions.
The law increases the influence of units of local self-government
in the granting of management concessions in seaports and the use of
the maritime domain. The parliament also adopted an amendment by
Social Democrat Tonci Zuvela allowing the establishment of more
port administrations in one county.
The parliament also passed laws on the general safety of products,
technical requirements for products, and on the recognition of
foreign qualifications.
