ZAGREB, Sept 11 (Hina) - Parliament on Thursday passed a law on the criminal responsibility of legal entities which envisages penalising companies for crimes committed by management. #L# The government said the law should be adopted due to the frequent grave forms of economic crimes which are a consequence of organised activities of several persons, as well as due to technological development which has led to new forms of crime (environmental crime, food poisoning, etc.) the responsibility for which lays on companies. The government claims that the existing criminal liability of physical persons in legal entities is not a sufficient instrument to prevent white-collar crime. The law foresees financial fines ranging from 5,000 to five million kuna for legal entities. Under the new law, a company will be closed down if an investigation shows that it was established for criminal activities, or if its business transactions were used mostly to commit crime. Parliament resumed its sitting with a debate on amendments to a law on the financing local-self government units. (EUR1 = 7.5 kuna) (hina) it
