and inadequate organisation of the fire-fighting service. #L#
"Some persons who are responsible for the situation in the fire-
fighting system should resign because they did not secure funds on
time," the head of the union section, Mladen Magdic, said at a news
conference.
He said that the government had paid only 10 of 25 million kuna
intended for the fire-fighting service this year.
The unionists demand that an additional 30 million kuna be set aside
for the next season. They are also dissatisfied with inadequate
salaries.
Fire-fighters have done a good job, but coordination in the field
has failed due to lack of a chain of command, said Goran Frankovic,
head of the Association of Professional Firefighters. He warned
about the insufficient number of people trained to operate fire-
fighting planes.
The Association and the union section urged adopting a law on the
firefighting service and a programme for the development of the
fire-prevention system on the model of Mediterranean countries.
