HEALTH MINISTER ANNOUNCES EUROPEAN STANDARDS IN HOSPITALS

SPLIT, July 28 (Hina) - Health Minister Andro Vlahusic said on Monday that all hospitals in Croatia would meet European standards within the next three years. #L# Vlahusic was in the southern coastal city of Split where he opened the newly reconstructed radiology department at the Split hospital. The Health Ministry, Split County and the City of Split spent about 150 million kuna (approximately 20 million euros) from the national budget on the modernisation of the department. Speaking at a press conference organised by his liberal party Libra, the minister said that the completion of this project made it possible for the Split hospital to meet European standards. "The quality of health services in Split is very important for the development of tourism in Dalmatia," he added. Vlahusic announced that 200 million kuna (approx. 26.6 million euros) would be invested in the modernisation of the gynaecology department and that an agreement would be signed within the next two weeks to reconstruct the maternity ward. Vlahusic said that 150 million kuna (approx. 20 million euros) would be invested to improve conditions in primary health care in Split County. The minister went on to say that a new bill had been drafted to facilitate artificial insemination procedure, which he said would be free of charge. Asked if donation of egg cells would be legalised in Croatia, Vlahusic said that this was an ethical, moral and cultural issue in which all national institutions, non-governmental organisations and religious communities would be involved. He announced that he would stand in the next parliamentary election in constituency no. 10 which covers Split and Dubrovnik. The liberal scene in Croatia is fragmented, and Libra will try to fill in the gap left by the HSLS (Social Liberal Party) when it turned to the right, Vlahusic said, adding that his party will have at least one representative in each constituency. As a parliamentary party, Libra will participate in forming a new government with its present partners. Judging by its results, this government deserves another term of office to complete the projects it has started and take Croatia into the European Union, the minister said. (hina) vm sb
