The Croatian Peasants Party (HSS) requested a postponement of
voting, stating that this was a very serious law and that amendments
of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), which the government today
did not accept and which MPs did not vote on, shed new light on it.
Drago Krpina (HDZ) suggested an amendment to a provision which
makes government subsidies possible for important products, such
as milk or flour, independent of the fact whether these are domestic
or imported products.
The MP believes that subsidies can only be given to protect the
domestic product, while the government thinks that this would be
discriminatory against foreign products.
Deputy Finance Minister Damir Kustrak said that subsidies were
given out under European Union stipulation independent of the
origin of the product, so Croatia should adjust to this.
According to the government, government subsidies would be divided
dependant on the type, aim and definition -- assistance, subsidies
and donations.
The law aims at providing a clear insight into government
subsidies, which will be the task of the Agency for the Protection
of Market Competition.
MPs continued the 30th session with a discussion on four drafts of
the electoral law -- of the Democratic Centre, the HSS, the Social
Democrats (SDP) and a joint one by Zlatko Kramaric of the Liberal
Party and Damir Kajin of the Istrian Democratic Assembly.
