The deputies were elected by a majority of vote, while MPs of the
opposition Serb Radical Party walked out of the session protesting
against this model of the election of deputies. Representatives of
that party, led by Vojislav Seselj, said they were for the direct
election at which citizens could choose their deputies.
In the joint 126-seat parliament of Serbia and Montenegro, 91 seats
will be occupied by deputies from Serbia and 35 are given for
Montenegrins.
Some of the leading Serbian parties in the new parliament are the
ruling DOS coalition with 37 seats, the Democratic Party of Serbia
led by Vojislav Kostunica with 17 seats, while Slobodan Milosevic's
Socialists will have 12 seats, and the Radicals eight (8).
The new parliament is likely to convene on Friday, 28 February, or
on Monday, 3 March.
