BELGRADE, Jan 27 (Hina) - At an extraordinary session on Monday, the
Serbian parliament began its discussion of a proposed charter of
the future community of Serbia and Montenegro, as well as a draft
act on the implementation of administration. #L#
Serbian Premier Zoran Djindjic called on MPs at the beginning of the
session to adopt the charter and the law even though the solutions
in these documents were "imperfect", assessing that "Serbia will be
well preserved in the new community which envisages many
compromises".
"I don't think we are making a rotten compromise and that we should
have parted. We need to offer some future generations a chance to
estimate if deteriorated relations between Serbian and Montenegro
are definitive," Djindjic said, calling on MPs to adopt the charter
because it was "in the state and national interest and in line with
reality".
In order for the charter and legislature to be adopted, it requires
126 of a total of 250 votes in the republic's parliament. The head of
the bench of the ruling DOS coalition, Cedomir Jovanovic, said he
expected that regardless of the opposition's attitude and any
possible negative votes from the Democratic Christian Party of
Serbia, DOS would have sufficient votes to adopt both documents.
The Montenegrin parliament will discuss the charter and
legislature on Tuesday, while both councils in the Yugoslav
parliament will do so next week.
