meeting of the Economic-Social Council. #L#
At that meeting, representatives of the government, employers and
unions will inspect a bill of amendments to the Labour Act. It is
expected that Racan will attend.
Unions are demanding that the government refrain from the changes
which they say decrease workers' rights.
Racan today rejected these demands, stressing that the government
would not give in to ultimatums or threats of a general strike. He
announced that the bill would be forwarded into parliamentary
procedure at the next government session on Thursday.
Government representatives believe that two and half months that
the first and second readings of the bill in the Sabor will take is
sufficient time to improve the bill.
The presidents of the five union federations will be received by
President Stjepan Mesic on Wednesday, while on Friday they should
meet with Sabor President Zlatko Tomcic.
