ZAGREB, Jan 9 (Hina) - Unless the government decides to abandon
amendments to the Labour Act which reduce workers' rights, the
Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Croatia (SSSH) will call
on workers to join a general strike to be staged in February, heads
of Croatia's largest union federation said on Thursday. #L#
The SSSH opposes all amendments to the labour legislation until an
independent labour judicial body is established, wages paid and
social security for workers who are losing jobs guaranteed.
The SSSH will propose to other union federations to set a certain
deadline by which the government should meet the requests, while in
case of a negative response workers will go on general strike in
February when the parliament is scheduled to discuss the amendments
to the labour legislation.
The proposed amendments to the Labour Act have so far been dismissed
by union federations. Union federations' heads will meet on Monday
to try and reach agreement on a single policy towards the government
in order to prevent the adoption of the announced changes.
The government-sponsored changes to the Labour Act propose the
reduction of severance pays and period of notice, the introduction
of the same status for workers with permanent and temporary work
contracts and the redefinition of the term small businessman.
