According to statements by representatives of the government and
unions after their meeting tonight about amendments to the Labour
Act, the government is decisive in its intent to change the Act,
while unions ask the government to give up the amendments and begin
drawing up a new solution.
"The government wants to reach as high a degree of agreement as
possible with social partners about changes to the Labour Act,"
Granic told reporters after the meeting.
He announced that he would convene a session of the Economic and
Social Council for Wednesday, which will discuss unions'
criticism.
The five union federations are asking of the government to withdraw
from procedure a bill on labour by January 24 at the latest,
otherwise, they would organise protest rallies, including a
general strike.
The unions are opposing the proposed decrease of severance pays,
curbing dismissal notification periods, equalising permanent and
temporary employment, and increasing the number of employees in
small companies (who can be dismissed more easily).
