"All must behave in such a way to protect the dignity of constitutional functions which they perform. I expect all, including President Mesic, to act in line with the law. Laws are clear and they state that certain appointments and dismissals are co-signed by the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister," Sanader told reporters after a meeting with POA chief Josko Podbevsek in the government building.
Sanader said that secret services were not politicised and that heads of intelligence services were not members of any party. He said that Podbevsek had not offered him his resignation and that he had requested the POA chief to submit a report on the case.
He recalled that Mesic and he had already co-signed two dismissals and two appointments.
"We talked in line with the highest democratic standards and reached agreement. I do not understand why Mesic now acted contrary to the law, there was no need for him to make unilateral moves," he added.
Commenting on events regarding the replacement of the POA chief, President Mesic today stated that there was no constitutional crisis.
Asked about the opposition's proposal for a vote of confidence in Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul, Sanader said that the parliament did not discuss confidence in Zuzul, but rather that the opposition requested a vote of no confidence in the minister.
"It was them (the opposition) who had to muster 77 votes, not the parties which hold the majority in the parliament," he said, adding that parliament speaker Vladimir Seks proposed holding a news conference to show a video recording of the vote as the only important piece of evidence.
