ZAGREB, Nov 15 (Hina) - The recently elected presidency of the Liberal Party (LS) has unanimously decided to support the candidacy of the incumbent Croatian President Stjepan Mesic for the second term, and the party would act in the presidential campaign in accordance with this decision, the LS chief, Zlatko Benasic, said on Monday.

"It is very important that Stjepan Mesic remains the Croatian president," Benasic told a news conference in Zagreb.

Benasic added that the party's 15-member presidency also supported the initiative of the Opposition to give a no-confidence vote in Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul. Thus, two LS members of parliament -- Ivo Banac and Zlatko Kramaric -- have been told to vote for the minister's dismissal.

The presidency of this opposition party appointed a three-member team in charge of negotiations wit other parties, primarily the People's Party (HNS), Libra, and also Social Liberal Party (HSLS), on cooperation and possible merger.

The LS is in favour of forming a united bloc with parties that have similar platforms, and negotiations on this topic will continue with attention being paid to the rating and membership of each party in concern, Benasic said.

"The merger can be carried out only at the equal foundations", and if it turns out to be impossible, the parties can always negotiate their coalitions in units of local authorities, he added.

With regard to negotiations with the HSLS, Benasic said that 'positive vibrations' were being sent from that party, but at the moment it was difficult to predict the final outcome of the talks between it and the LS.
