THE HAGUE, Oct 1 (Hina) - Slovene Interior Minister Rado Bohinc criticised Croatia at a European Union ministerial conference in The Hague on Friday, claiming Croatia had recently caused a border incident on Europe's external border and that the conduct of its police had been unacceptable.

Addressing a meeting of justice and interior ministers of EU members and candidates at which Croatia took part, Bohinc said incidents occurred on territory where the Croatian-Slovene border had still not been determined.

Bohinc said Slovenia wished to resolve problems in the European manner, through dialogue, and that this was why it had moved an agreement on the avoidance of incidents.

Responding to the criticism, Croatian Interior Ministry State Secretary Ivica Buconjic said Croatia was not responsible at all for last week's border incident.

He said the incident had been an act of provocation on the part of several Slovene citizens led by MP Janez Podobnik who he added broke Croatian regulations by illegally entering what was undoubtedly Croatian soil.

Buconjic stressed Croatian police avoided incidents, applied international standards, and wished to resolve misunderstandings in the spirit of good neighbourly relations.

Speaking after the meeting, he reiterated Croatian police had acted by Croatian regulations, on Croatian territory, in the way that any European police force would have, and that there had been no police brutality.

No one at the conference reacted to the statements by the Croatian and Slovene officials.

Speaking of Croatia's first participation in the conference, which is part of regular consultations of EU interior and justice ministers, Buconjic said Croatia expected to take active part in operations implemented by European police forces and Europol.

Today, the conference discussed the security threats illegal and legal migrations and asylum seekers pose to the EU. On this front, all police forces, including Croatia's, will be asked to carry out the EU policy by respecting the highest standards and human rights.

Buconjic said Croatia would be expected to stop on its borders as many illegal migrants entering the Union. He added Croatia must upgrade its border control and asylum system.
