"There are requests for downsizing for as much as 50 per cent, but there have also been some other ideas lately. They will all be taken into consideration, agreed with the Montenegrin authorities and approved by the Supreme Defence Council," Davinic said.
He said that the present number of troops should be reduced when compared to demographic indicators and the size of the territory.
"The reason for troop downsizing is the lack of funds in Montenegro to meet the military needs on its territory. The authorities also want downsizing because there is no threat to security," the defence minister said.
Davinic said that the union's armed forces numbered about 65,000 personnel and that the military reform envisaged reducing their number by 20 per cent.
Davinic said that soldiers were being withdrawn from Montenegro, along with weapons and other military hardware, and that all surplus equipment would be offered for sale.
The Montenegrin public was recently informed that the Defence Ministry had offered 400 tanks for sale.
