ZAGREB, Sept 15 (Hina) - The Croatian Radio-Television (HRT) Programmes Council on Wednesday condemned pressure and interference "by any political option or institution" into the content of HRT programmes.

Such conduct is contrary to legal regulations and democratic practice, members of the Council agreed in a discussion about last week's meeting between the HRT leadership and the Parliament Presidency and yesterday's session of parliamentary committees which focused on the work of the national media company.

In order to discuss in more detail objections presented by the Parliament Presidency, the Council requested the HRT programmes leadership to submit a report on the coverage of parliamentary sessions since the start of the Council's term in November last year.

The Council also supported the programming leadership's decision on live TV coverage of parliamentary sessions to start an hour later, at 10:30 hours.

Opening the discussion, HRT director Mirko Galic informed the Council about last week's meeting at the parliament.

Describing the talks as fair, Galic said that parliamentary leaders believed that their activities did not receive adequate coverage and called this an attempt to marginalise the parliament's role.

Galic said that there was no scenario to marginalise the parliament's role, but that news programmes should be adjusted to modern European standards.

Although he described the meeting in the parliament as unusual, he said that there was no need to dramatise the event if no new meetings of that kind were called.

The Croatian Helsinki Committee and the Association of Croatian Judges have stated that the meeting renewed the unacceptable practice of direct interference of politics into television programmes.

The HRT Programmes Council is also expected to discuss the Croatian Television's (HTV) programmes policy for the period between September and late May next year, as well as the HRT's business report for the first six months of this year.
