ZAGREB, Sept 9 (Hina) - The Croatian Helsinki Committee (HHO) Media Council and the Association of Croatian Judges (UHS) on Thursday issued a joint statement saying that Wednesday's meeting between Parliament President Vladimir Seks and members of the Croatian Radio Television (HRT) management had renewed the unacceptable practice of interference of politics in television programmes.

Since the statement only quotes Seks, Hina asked the leaders of the two associations whether their statement referred to yesterday's session of the Parliament Presidency, which addressed the coverage of the parliament's activities by the HRT, or some other session.

HHO leader Zarko Puhovski and UHS president Vladimir Gredelj said in separate phone interviews the statement referred to yesterday's session of the Parliament Presidency, and that they held Seks responsible.

Responding to the reporter's statement that Seks' assessment about "the Croatian Television marginalising the activities of the parliament and its officials" was supported by other parliament vice-presidents, including Mato Arlovic and Vesna Pusic, Puhovski said that "Seks is responsible because he ordered that the session on the HRT programme policy be called, which is inadmissible".

The joint statement reads that "in democratic societies it is uncommon for the parliament president - or any other senior official - to invite for talks the leadership of a public media company and criticise its programme and request special treatment, as if the HTV was a branch of the state protocol and not a public media company".

The HHO Media Council and the UHS also believe that the HRT leadership should not have agreed to a formal agreement on fixed terms for live broadcasts of parliamentary sessions.

After yesterday's session of the Parliament's Presidency, Seks told reporters that the Presidency had presented a number of objections regarding the coverage of the activities of the parliament and its members and the unequal treatment of the parliament in relation to the prime minister and the president of the republic.
