Serbian president says Kosovo's independence unacceptable

PRISTINA, Feb 13 (Hina) - Serbian President Boris Tadic said on Sundaythe independence of Kosovo was an unacceptable solution.
PRISTINA, Feb 13 (Hina) - Serbian President Boris Tadic said on Sunday the independence of Kosovo was an unacceptable solution.

"I'm against Kosovo's independence and for me it's unacceptable. I will never accept such a solution," he said in a speech to the residents of the Serb enclave Strpce, which has a population of about 12,000.

Tadic, who is on a two-day visit to the province, said he asked the international authorities in Pristina for additional security guarantees for Serbs and all non-Albanians in Kosovo, identical to those Serbia provides to Albanians in its south.

Earlier today, Tadic visited two other Serb enclaves, Crnica and Silovo, and held talks with the UN civil administrator in the province, Soren Jessen-Petersen. The talks focused on the final status of Kosovo, although there have been no press statements.

A group of some 50 ethnic Albanians, members of two associations of families of people gone missing during last decade's conflict, protested in Pristina against Tadic's visit, which they say is a provocation. There were no incidents, except for an egg that was thrown.

This is the first visit a Serbian president pays to Kosovo since 1999, when the UN began governing the province. The visit continues on Monday with tight security measures.
