PRISTINA, Feb 11 (Hina) - The district court in the southern Serbian town of Vranje on Friday sentenced nine ethnic Albanians to a total of 57 years and seven months in prison for conspiracy to commit terrorist attacks and the 2002 murder of a Serbian Security-Information Agency agent, Selver Fazliu, Kosovo Radio reported on Friday.

The highest sentences of 15 years in jail were imposed on a former commander of the Liberation Army of Presevo, Medvedja and Bujanovac, each Lirim Jakupi, and Besim Tahiri, who were both found guilty of Fazliu's murder.

Jakupi and Tahiri were tried in absentia as they are currently detained in the US base Bondsteel in Kosovo.

Presevo, Medvedja and Bujanovac are the Albanian-populated area in southern Serbia on the border with Kosovo.

Alban Rashiti, an underage defendant, was sentenced to five years in prison and will serve his term in a juvenile prison.

The other six defendants received shorter prison sentences for assisting former Albanian guerillas in southern Serbia.

Defendant Basim Halil was acquitted.

Lawyers for the convicted Albanians said they would appeal the verdict.

The verdict was proclaimed under tight security measures in the presence of the defendants' families and representatives of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe and NGOs.
